World Baseball Classic and our Trip to Toronto
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009World Baseball Classic and our Trip to Toronto
For me it’s nice to see the meaningful baseball played in March. As a dude who likes sports but is primarily a baseball fan, I get very impatient for ball this time of year and to have this tournament is nice. Sure it has its problems but I think it’s good for baseball.
Case in point- the game we went to this past Saturday.
Lump, Dan, Pat and I all went up to Toronto to see game 1 of pool C. Team USA took on Team Canada and it was a REAL nail-biter. This was the first game I ever attended that had a playoff atmosphere. When I was a kid I went to a couple Yankees-Blue Jays games in Toronto that were important regular season games but I didn’t really appreciate the significance then.
Anyway, I couldn’t help but get caught up in the excitement even as a visiting fan routing for US in Canada. The crowd was on their feet screaming and yelling and cheering for baseball- in MARCH! This could REALLY boost ticket sales for the Jays early on in the season. Fans that were at that game could be very quick to grab some tickets in hopes to re-live some of the excitement they got at the game at Rogers Center in March. Unfortunately sales will probably plummet once the Jays start inevitably collapsing but that’s just a small way the WBC could help the sport.
The rest of the trip was a BLAST! You had to make sure you did or said nothing wrong! Anything you said or did WOULD be used against you in a RIP fest for the rest of your life.
Even the slightest little thing got you torn a new one so needless to say when I pulled off things like missing exits, suggesting a Buffet to hit up for lunch that was expensive that everybody hated, nearly rear-ended a car on the QEW, Blocking traffic in Toronto, and turn the wrong way down a one-way street, I heard it pretty good. But man I gotta tell ya, I never laughed so much in my life.
The only part of the trip I would change is our parking spot in Toronto. We should have grabbed a bite to eat and took our time getting out of our garage to let the crowd fizzle, or parked a little further from the stadium. That could have helped us get out of town a little faster. Instead we parked VERY close to the stadium and headed right to the car after the game to head home. We were in the car an HOUR before we even got out of the parking garage. We then spent another ½ hour getting out of the city. This made that 3 hour drive in the rain quite miserable for me.
Overall, great trip! We thought about staying another night and that would have made the trip even more great for me! It would have broken up the driving a lot more and given me another night to get ripped apart by Dan, Pat, and Lump.
